Spinach Gravy Delight :)

The other day as I was flipping through the  various channels on the T.V I came across the good old Popeye the sailor show and was inspired to make a salubrious lunch that afternoon containing a bowl of those famous green leaves which prove to be a source of his strength:) a simple but delicious recipe by my mum which I call Spinach Gravy Delight !   below are the details which, if  followed correctly you may also, be able to relish  the preparation as much as I do!

  •  bunch of Spinach
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 Onion
  • 5 Garlic Cloves peeled
  • 1 teaspoon of red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered coriander
  • 1 teaspoon powdered Cinnamon
  • 1 small Bay leaf
  • 1/2 cup milk or milk cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Cow’s Ghee {clarified Butter}
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • A few pieces of small fried potatoes or 4-6 small cubes of cottage cheese slightly fried in oil.{not a necessity , its your choice }
  • A few coriander leaves for garnishing

  1. 1st things 1st wash  the spinach leaves thoroughly then dry them off.
  2. Blanch them in water  till they are tender and later strain the water.
  3. Put the leaves in a mixer and grind them into fine minute particles (add few drops of water to acquire the desired result if necessary ).
  4. Dice the onion,tomato and the garlic cloves.
  5. Now take a nonstick frying Pan , heat it for 3 mins then pour the ghee into it also add the diced onion,tomato,garlic and the remaining ingredients except the milk and the spinach puree and salt. Allow the ingredients to fry till the onions turn golden brown in colour.
  6. Now pour the spinach puree and saute for a minute and later add the cup of milk & salt, add the potatoes or cottage to make it more whole some if you want, boil for 5 mins to , garnish it with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot 🙂 {tastes best with Indian Bread, you can also have it with  fried rice }

    Love Spinach and I would love to try this.
    I wondered if soy milk, or almond or an alternative could be used instead of Cow’s milk?
    Cow’s ghee, is there an alternative for this?
    It would be good to know if the recipe has been tried with alternative to cow products.
    Thank you.

      You could use Buffalo milk as far as soy or almond milk is concerned I haven’t tried but there might be a difference in thickness of gravy though try coconut milk
